A used branded bike can be the best value in Pakistan, but only if it is in good condition. Use this checklist when you buy from OLX, Facebook Marketplace, a friend or a shop.
The 10-point checklist
- Frame cracks and dents. Look closely around the joints, under the down tube and near the bottom bracket. Cracks in an aluminium or carbon frame are a deal-breaker.
- Fork. Push down on a suspension fork. It should move smoothly and return without knocking. A rigid fork should be straight.
- Brakes. Squeeze both levers. They should stop the wheel firmly before the lever touches the handlebar. Check pad wear and, for disc brakes, the rotors.
- Gears. Shift through every gear while turning the pedals. Shifts should be quick, without skipping or noise.
- Chain. A rusty or stretched chain means the cassette may also be worn out.
- Wheels. Spin each wheel. It should run straight without wobbling or rubbing the brakes. Squeeze pairs of spokes to find loose ones.
- Tyres. Look for cracks, cuts and worn tread. New tyres are a bonus, for example the Felt Z85 comes with new Continental tyres.
- Bearings. Hold the frame and rock the cranks and wheels side to side. There should be no play or grinding.
- Correct size. A bargain is useless if the frame does not fit you. Check the size guide.
- Real photos and a test. Ask for clear photos from every side and, if possible, see the bike before paying.
Fair price for a used cycle
A used branded bike in good condition usually sells well below its new price, depending on age, condition and parts. Compare a few similar listings, and remember that a bike needing new tyres, chain or brakes will cost you more after purchase.
