A gear cycle lets you change how hard you pedal. Low gears make climbing hills and riding into wind easy; high gears let you go fast on flat roads. Here is how gears work and what geared bikes cost.

What does "21-speed" mean?
The number of speeds is the front chainrings multiplied by the rear cogs. A bike with 3 chainrings at the front and 7 cogs at the back is a 21-speed. A 24-speed has 3 x 8, and a road bike with 2 x 11 is a 22-speed. More speeds give smaller steps between gears, so you always find a comfortable pedalling speed.
Shimano and SRAM groupsets
The groupset is the set of gears, shifters, chain and brakes. Shimano and SRAM are the best-known makers. For road bikes, Shimano's range goes from Claris and Sora (entry level) to Tiagra and 105 (performance). Better groupsets shift faster, weigh less and last longer.
How many gears do you need?
- Kids (7–12 years): a simple 7-speed is enough. Single-speed is easiest for beginners.
- City commuting: 18 to 21 speeds cover bridges, flyovers and headwind.
- Mountain and hills: 21 to 24 speeds give low gears for steep climbs.
- Road and fitness: 18 to 22 speeds with a road groupset like Sora, 105 or similar.
Gear cycle care
Keep the chain clean and lightly oiled, shift while pedalling (not while standing still), and avoid using the biggest front ring with the biggest rear cog. Well-cared-for gears last for years.
